The 2 Series has standard driver and passenger side airbags combined with three-point seat belts, a combination which is 29% more effective in preventing injury and death than seatbelts alone.

To maximize occupant safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the BMW 2 Series have pretensioners to eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers.

The 2 Series has shoulder harnesses for all passengers. Shoulder harnesses are 10% more effective than lap belts in preventing injuries from collisions. Recent studies indicate that lap belts alone may cause as many or more injuries than they prevent.

The BMW 2 Series has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags helps prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision.

The 2 Series has standard front seat side-impact airbags and head airbags for both seat rows, which act as a forgiving barrier between the passengers and the door. Combined with high-strength steel door beams this system increases protection from broadside collisions.

Using vehicle speed sensors and seat sensors, smart airbags in the 2 Series deploy with different levels of force or don’t deploy at all to help better protect passengers of all sizes in different collisions. Airbags without smart features will always deploy full force.

The 2 Series has standard four-wheel antilock disc brakes for quicker stops and controlled steering ability, especially under poor traction conditions.

The 2 Series has standard City Collision Mitigation, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether.

The 2 Series has a standard PostCrash iBrake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The 2 Series offers optional Active Park Distance Control that use rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision.

The 2 Series offers all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow.

To prevent wheel-spin and loss of control under poor traction conditions, full range traction control is standard on the BMW 2 Series.

The 2 Series has standard Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which uses the antilock brake hardware along with powerful software and additional sensors to detect the beginning of a skid. DSC then intervenes by automatically applying the brake at one appropriate wheel, preventing a skid. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration study showed that skid control systems reduced single-vehicle car crashes by 30%.

The BMW 2 Series has Daytime Running Lights to help keep it more visible under all conditions. Canadian government studies show that driving with lights during the day reduces accidents by 11% by making vehicles more conspicuous.

The 2 Series’ lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane.

The 2 Series has standard Park Distance Control to help warn drivers about vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles behind or in front of their vehicle. The 2 Series also has a standard backup monitor to help drivers see any and all obstacles behind their vehicle, and an optional Surround View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle.

The 2 Series’ blind spot warning system uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the 2 Series’ standard Cross Traffic Warning uses sensors in the rear to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions.

The 2 Series’ driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year.

For better protection of the passenger compartment, the 2 Series uses safety cell construction with a three-dimensional high-strength frame that surrounds the passenger compartment. It provides extra impact protection and a sturdy mounting location for door hardware and side impact beams. A body-on-frame design has no frame members above the floor of the vehicle.

Compared to metal, the 2 Series’ plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire.

The 2 Series’ gas tank is mounted inside the frame rails in front of the rear axle to optimally protect the fuel tank in a collision. A gas tank mounted behind the rear axle is more susceptible to rear collisions.

The 2 Series has standard BMW Assist, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. Without a GPS response system, if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

A hardened steel chain, with no maintenance needs, drives the camshafts in the 2 Series’ engine. If a rubber cam drive belt that needs periodic replacement breaks, the engine could be severely damaged when the pistons hit the opened valves.

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the engines in the 2 Series have an overhead cam design, rather than an old pushrod design.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the 2 Series has a standard 170-amp alternator (210-amp - 2 Series 6 cyl.).

The battery on the 2 Series is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the 2 Series’ battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the 2 Series average in reliability.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the 2 Series third among small premium cars in their 2023 Initial Quality Study.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2022 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that BMW vehicles are above average in dependability. BMW has 5 fewer problems per 100 vehicles than average.

The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip.

The 2 Series has 13.7 gallons of fuel capacity, for longer range between fill-ups.

The 2 Series has a tether attaching its gas cap to prevent its loss, so it can’t be left at a gas station if the driver forgets to screw the cap back in.

The 2 Series has a standard locking fuel door which locks and unlocks with the power locks. A locking fuel door helps prevent fuel theft and vandalism, such as sugar in the tank.

The BMW 2 Series comes standard with an automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city.

For more complete vehicle control the 2 Series has Steptronic, with the available convenience of an automatic transmission and the complete gear control of a manual transmission without the inconvenience of a clutch. Steptronic allows the driver to eliminate unwanted shifts and maximize engine braking by down shifting while cornering.

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the BMW 2 Series, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway.

All wheel drive, available in the 2 Series, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling.

The 2 Series’ launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction.

For better traction, the 2 Series has large 225/45R18 standard tires. The M240i Coupe’s optional tires are larger front 245/35R19 and rear 255/35R19.

The 230i’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a low 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall. The M240i Coupe’s optional tires have a lower 35 series profile.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the 230i has standard 18-inch wheels. The M240i has standard 19-inch wheels.

The BMW 2 Series’ wheels have 5 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the 2 Series can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair.

The BMW 2 Series’ independent front suspension is much lighter than a solid front axle, which allows the 2 Series’ wheels to react more quickly and accurately to the road’s surface, improving both ride and handling.

For superior ride and handling, the BMW 2 Series has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort.

The 2 Series has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads.

The 2 Series has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the 2 Series flat and controlled during cornering.

The front and rear suspension of the 2 Series uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than leaf springs. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

The 2 Series offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads.

For much better steering response and tighter handling the 2 Series has rack and pinion steering, like Formula racecars, instead of a recirculating-ball type.

The 2 Series has standard power steering to make quick and controllable low speed maneuvers easy.

The 2 Series has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the 2 Series’ wheelbase is 107.9 inches.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the 2 Series is 62.2 to 62.4 inches wide in the front and 62.8 to 62.9 inches wide in the rear.

The 2 Series’ front to rear weight distribution is an even 51.4% to 48.6%. This gives the 2 Series more stable handling and braking.

The M240i Coupe xDrive handles at .98 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the 2 Series’ turning circle is 36.4 feet. The 2 Series xDrive’s turning circle is 38.1 feet.

The BMW 2 Series may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs only 3446 to 3871 pounds.

The 2 Series is only 179 to 179.4 inches long, making the 2 Series easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The 2 Series is only 72.4 inches wide, making it easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The 2 Series is only 54.8 to 55.1 inches in height, making the 2 Series much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

Unibody construction makes the 2 Series’ chassis much stiffer, which contributes to better handling, and enables softer springs to be used for a better ride. Unibody construction’s stiffness also contributes to better durability and less body squeaks and rattles.

For excellent aerodynamics, the 2 Series has standard flush composite headlights.

The front grille of the 2 Series uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the M240i Coupe xDrive is quiet:

The 2 Series Coupe has a large 13.8 cubic feet of trunk volume with its rear seat up.

To allow full utilization of available cargo room, the 2 Series’ trunk lid uses gas strut supported hinges that don’t intrude into the trunk.

The 2 Series’ standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo.

The 2 Series’ standard folding rear seats are split to accommodate bulky cargo. A single piece folding rear seat is not as flexible; long cargo and a passenger can’t share the rear seat.

With its coupe body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the 2 Series offers cargo security.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the 2 Series.

The 2 Series uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. A prop rod supporting a heavy hood takes two hands to open the hood and set, it gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

The engine in the 2 Series is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because there are no rear spark plugs and the accessory belts are in front.

A Condition-Based Service Display is standard on the 2 Series to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes, spark plug replacement, brake fluid replacement, and vehicle inspections, based on actual driving conditions. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that BMW service is excellent. J.D. Power ranks BMW 7th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average).

The 2 Series’ entire steering wheel hub sounds the horn, facilitating hitting the horn in an emergency.

The 2 Series offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior.

The engine computer on the 2 Series automatically engages the starter until the car starts with one twist of the key and disables the starter while the engine is running. Without this feature the starter can be accidentally engaged while the engine is running, making a grinding noise and possibly damaging the starter and ring gear.

The 2 Series’ standard tilting steering column adjusts to different sized drivers and makes entering and exiting easier.

To help each driver find a more comfortable driving position, the 2 Series has a telescoping steering wheel. Much better than just a tilt steering wheel or adjustable seat, this allows a short driver to sit further from the steering wheel while maintaining contact with the pedals.

When two different drivers share the 2 Series, the memory system makes it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations.

The 2 Series offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, warning and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road.

The 2 Series’ power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically.

The 2 Series’ standard power windows allow the driver or passenger to lower and raise the windows without leaning over or being distracted.

The 2 Series’ front power windows open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car.

The 2 Series’ standard power window controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access.

If the front windows are left open on the 2 Series w/Comfort Access the driver can close them at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote.

In case of a sudden change of weather, the 2 Series Convertible offers an optional remote convertible top that can be raised from a distance to protect the interior of the vehicle from damage. On a hot day the 2 Series Convertible offers an optional remote opening feature, to lower the top from outside.

The 2 Series’ standard power locks allow the driver or passenger to lock or unlock all the doors at a touch without leaning over.

The 2 Series’ power locks have a lockout prevention feature. When the driver’s door is open, it won’t lock, so you can’t possibly lock your keys in the vehicle.

The 2 Series’ standard doors lock when a certain speed is reached. This is an important feature for occupant safety. Locked doors are proven to open less often in collisions, and they are also effective in preventing crime at traffic lights. (The power lock’s automatic feature may have to be activated by your dealer.)

Comfort Go standard on the 2 Series allows you to start the engine without removing a key from pocket or purse.

The 2 Series’ rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers.

The 2 Series’ LED headlights produce a whiter, brighter light (up to 3x) using five times less power than halogen headlights. LED lights also light instantly and last over twenty times longer than halogen.

The 2 Series has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the 2 Series detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the 2 Series offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

The 2 Series’ standard side window demisters help clear frost or condensation from the side windows in the winter. Without side window demisters the driver may have to wipe the windows from the outside to gain side vision.

The 2 Series’ sun-visors swivel front-to-side to block glare from the side windows.

The 2 Series has standard power remote mirrors. Without a remote driver side or passenger side mirror the driver will have to roll down the windows and reach across the car to adjust the mirrors.

The 2 Series’ standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility.

The 2 Series’ power mirror controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access.

When the 2 Series is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position.

The 2 Series’ standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver.

The 2 Series offers optional heated front seats, which keep the driver and front passenger extremely comfortable in the winter.

On extremely cold winter days, the 2 Series’ optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up.

The 2 Series has a standard center folding armrest for the driver and front passenger. A center armrest helps combat driver fatigue.

The 2 Series has a standard center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable and it can provide a boundary between children.

The 2 Series’ standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible.

The 2 Series’ standard automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set, automatically controlling fan speed, vents and temperature to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment.

For greater rear passenger comfort, the 2 Series has standard rear a/c vents to keep rear occupants more comfortable.

A built-in pollen filter removes pollen, exhaust fumes and other pollutants from the 2 Series’ passenger compartment. This helps prevent lung and/or sinus irritation which can trigger allergies or asthma.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the 2 Series offers an optional Active Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic.

To help keep the driver’s hands on the wheel, the 2 Series has standard steering wheel controls for the radio.

Standard smartphone integration for the 2 Series allows the driver and passengers access to select programs on their smartphones, including reading text messages aloud, playing internet radio stations, tagging songs to buy them later, following twitter accounts and other connected activities without taking their eyes off the road or their hands from the wheel.

To direct the driver from any location to a given street address, a GPS navigation system is standard on the 2 Series. The 2 Series’ navigation system also has a real-time traffic update feature that offers alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service not available in all areas.)

With standard voice command, the 2 Series offers the driver hands free control of the radio, climate controls and the navigation computer by simply speaking.

Bluetooth wireless connectivity is standard on the 2 Series, connecting the driver and passenger’s cell phones to the vehicle systems. This allows them to use the vehicle’s stereo and hand controls to place calls safely and easily.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the BMW 2 Series offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console.

The 2 Series’ optional Parking Assistant can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically.
